8 Tips For Creating a Google Adwords Campaign

Hey, my Digital Wonders! How are you all doing? Today's "PPC Back to Basics" blog post focuses on the key things you should consider when creating a Google Adwords campaign.

Wordstream defines Google Adwords as "Google's advertising system in which advertisers bid on certain keywords in order for their clickable ads to appear in Google's search results." Google advertising is a great way to raise awareness of your brand and drive visits to your website. If you're still unsure, check out some interesting Google AdWords statistics I've found:
  • 98% of searchers choose a business that is on page 1 of the results they get (source: Mainstreet ROI)
  • Google Search handles more than 3 billion searches day (source: Search Engine land)
  • Over 1.2 million businesses advertise on the Google Search Network (source: Wordstream)

Check out the top 8 tips to consider when creating a Google Adwords campaign;

  • Tip # 1 Visit https://adwords.google.com and create an account.
  • Tip # 2 -  Have a clear goal on what you want to achieve and what the desired outcomes need to be. For example, do you want potential customers to call you or visit a particular web page and make a purchase?
  • Tip # 3 - When writing you advert copy, apply the AIDA advertising model principles. The acronym stands for; Attention, Interest, Desire, and Action. These are to make sure your Google adverts:
  1. Attract Attention
  2. Create Interest
  3. Generate Desire
  4. Encourage users to take Action

  • Tip # 4 - Use a keyword research tool to identify search volumes for the keywords or phrases you want to use and ensure that the ad group is relevant to the landing page you are directing add traffic to. Tools such as Google Trends and Google Keyword planner are really helpful. Please view my previous blog post on finding the right keywords for your campaign.  Also, don't forget to include negative keywords to make sure your ads are served to relevant pages and improve the quality of web traffic visiting your website and improve your ad quality score (source: https://www.wordstream.com/articles/what-is-google-adwords).
  • Tip # 5 Once selecting your keywords, each keyword should be assigned to a match type. The three common match type options include; an Exact match - which has higher conversions, broad match - which have a greater reach and phrase match. Using a mixture of keyword matching options to reach your audience allows you to bid more for exact words and bid less for broad match terms.
  • Tip # 6 - Make sure you are using mobile preferred adverts.
  • Tip # 7 - Once your adword campaign goes live, always keep testing to identify which adverts get the best conversions and click-through rates.
  • Tip # 8 - Make sure you configure Google's re-marketing feature, which will enable you to show adverts to previous website users who took the time to visit your website but did not convert to a sale. PPC Hero has a great guide on remarketing. Please view here.
